Originally debuting in May as a one-off scriptreading event in the ExplorASIAN2005, reading Series for explorASIAN 2005, the evening's unexpected success prompted two participants, Grace Chin and Kathy Leung, toward an unusual conclusion: keep doing it, more often. Scripting Aloud’s first post-explorASIAN event took place August 15, and recurs on the third Monday of each subsequent month. Scripting Aloud is an initiative of Sparked, a Vancouver-based, non-affiliated networking group of pan-Asian Canadian performing artists and creative professionals. Sparked is currently exploring further direct and indirect sponsorship opportunities with media and performance groups in Vancouver, similar to its arrangement with VACT. An information-oriented website and regularly updated mailing list are planned. Monthly programming is projected to potentially include story development and performance/production workshops as well as discussion panels and other cross-promotional events, in addition to scriptreading. She is a member of the Editors’ Association of Canada (www.editors.ca) and of the Union of British Columbia Performers/ACTRA (www.ubcp.com). Email: intelligentlotus@gmail.com Kathy Leung has been involved with independent film since 2002 in various roles from director and writer to all-around go-to gopher girl. She hopes Scripting Aloud will bring awareness to the immense amount of current and emerging pan-Asian Canadian talent in Vancouver. Email: kathy.leung@gmail.com Mailing list
